From fundamental technique instruction to detailed belt promotions training drills, students will not only learn valuable skills but also develop essential life values such as confidence, discipline and respect. There are also detailed safety protocols in place which have been developed from years of experience ensuring that customers receive world-class standard care and instruction.
Who we are?
We are an amateur Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts sports academy based in Highbury, Palmerston North.
We strongly believe in giving back to the community and promoting Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts.
Our objective is to offer programs without charge to kids and teenagers in Highbury Awapuni Takaro and the surrounding areas, enabling them to take part in organized learning experiences.
Takaro BJJ/MMA opened its doors in October 2019, Fronted by Head Coach Corey Governor,
who had a dream of creating a space for Tamariki and Rangatahi from our Lower Socio-economic Communities to have free access to learning the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Corey strongly relates to the young people from these areas and has been engaging with rangatahi promoting health and well-being for many years through Touch Rugby and now Bjj/mma. He is an active and well-respected member of the community who is always looking for opportunities for the young people he works with. The fact that Corey has been able to keep this kaupapa moving forward throughout the pandemic is proof itself that he is doing something right. Many gifted students at the decile 1 Te Kura o Takaro where Corey works wouldn't have had the opportunity to discover their talents without the Takaro BJJ/MMA program.

what we value
At Takaro BJJ/MMA, we strive to implement the Māori health model Te Whare Tapa Wha into our classes.
Taha Hinengaro encourages our rangatahi to express their thoughts and feelings openly and teaches them how to respond constructively in difficult situations. Our coaches, Corey and his mother, assistant coach Raeleen, are always looking out for the well-being of their students and are available to talk about any issues they may have.
Taha Wairua is also a priority for us. We value each child as an individual and what they bring to the academy. We are supportive and respectful of all cultures and backgrounds, while encouraging them all to be respectful of each other and also to value themselves and be proud of who they are.
Taha Tinana is obviously a key focus of Takaro BJJ/MMA. We strive to achieve positive results for each individual by teaching them how to care for their body in terms of recovery and nutrition, as well as developing their skills and overall growth.
Finally, Taha Whanau is an important part of Takaro BJJ/MMA. Corey has been able to construct healthy relationships with the Tamariki and their whanau by welcoming them into the facility to be a part of the learning and training with their children and encouraging whanau to engage in the lessons with their children. We are committed to engaging with the community and upholding the manaakitanga.
